ميشولام ابن مناحم الفولتيري موضوع هذه الدراسة، هو أحد الرحالة اليهود الذين زاروا فلسطين مروراً بالإسكندرية والقاهرة وصحراء سيناء وصولاً لغزة وحبرون ثم القدس ومنها بالطريق الساحلي عبر يافا قفل لبلاده، كان ذلك عام 886هـ /1481م.
ولعل الأمر الذي يزيد من قيمة المادة التي حوتها رحلة رحلة ميشولام ابن مناحم بالذات؛ أن صاحبها لا يمت إلى ذوي السلطان بصلة، فكان شأنه عند تسجيل مشاهداته – السياسية والإقتصادية والعلمية خاصة – يتصف بالمصداقية – غالباً.
فاليهودي ميشولام ابن مناحم صاحب لم يركب الأهوال ويتجشم مشاق السفر إلى الأقطار السحيقة، في عصور تباعدت الشقة بين بلدانها ووعرت المسالك وعسرت طرق المواصلات؛ لنظم قصائد المديح ونسج عبارات الثناء لأرباب القصور وأصحاب التيجان.
إنما كان يعني في دراسة أحوال البلدان التي يجوبها ومعرفة سهلها ووعرها وجبالها وحزونها وأوديتها وأنهارها وخيراتها وخيراتها وغلتها والوقوف على محاسنها ومساوئها وتقدمها أو إنحطاطها وسيرة أهليها وعقائدهم ودرجة حضارتهم ومدنيتهم وطرق معيشتهم وأسباب رزقهم وما اتصفوا به من أخلاق وعادات وخمول ونشاط وقعود ونهوض.
وما إلى ذلك من أحوال لها الأثر المباشر في سير التاريخ وتطور الأحداث، فتراه – غالباً – يمتدح من يجدر بالمدح ويشجب ما يستحق الذم من غير ما خوف أو رقابة، فتخرج لنا الصورة التي يرسمها للبلدان والأقطار التي ارتادها، في غالب الأحيان قريبة من الواقع السياسي والإقتصادي بالخصوص دانية من الحقيقة.
وأهمية رحلة ميشولام بن مناحم الفولتيري تأتي أيضاً من زاوية كشف الصورة العبرية الغربية للبلاد العربية عامة والقدس والأراضي الفلسطينية خاصة، وطريقة التفكير العبرية / الغربية حيالها، والنظرة إلى الحقوق العربية والإسلامية في فلسطين، وربما يكون أهم ما جاء في رحلة هذا الربي ابن مناحم أنها أوضحت أن معظم السكان اليهود في فلسطين لم يكونوا مواطنين أصليين، وإنما قدموا لها من مناطق أخرى وبخاصة من أوروبا.
وبطبيعة الحال فنحن بحاجة ماسة إلى مثل هذه الأمور كي نفهم معتقد عدونا الذي سلب أرضنا بُغية الوصول إلى أفضل السبل لمواجهته، ومعرفة ما يخطط له، وإستئصال شاقته.
وتكمن أهمية الرحلة أيضاً فيما حوته من معلومات ثرية عن الأحوال السياسية والإقتصادية والإجتماعية والوجود اليهودي بالمنطقة العربية في الربع الأخير من القرن الخامس عشر الميلادي، وهي معلومات قيمة ومنها ما هي معلومات نادرة الذكر في المصادر المعاصرة.
