يتناول هذا البحث ثلاثة أعمال قصصية للكاتبة ليلى أبو العلا، منها روايتان: ""المترجمة""، و""كرم الأعداء""، وأخرى قصة قصيرة: النعامة. يقدم البحث فرضية وهي أن الأعمال القصصية المختارة تقدم خريطة متوازنة للعلاقات الإنسانية من خلال منظور يدعو للتعايش بين ثقافات متعددة الأجناس والأصول، ولا يتناقض مع مفهوم المقاومة لثقافة غربية أحادية مهيمنة. وتنقسم هذه الأطروحة إلى مقدمة وثلاثة فصول وخاتمة.
في المقدمة يتم عرض مبسط لبعض النظريات المؤثرة في كتابة الأدب، مثل نظرية صراع الحضارات لصاموئيل هانتنجتون، وصراع الثقافات لمهدي المنجرة ووجه الاختلاف بينهما. وتشير المقدمة إلى بعض الأمثلة لأفرادٍ وجماعات يسجلها التاريخ والتي كان الاختلاف الثقافي سبباً في تعرضها للتمييز الديني والعنصري. كما أدى الصراع في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين إلى إعادة رسم خرائط الصراع الثقافي، والذي ألقى بظلاله على صناعة الأدب، مما أسهم في ظهور أنواعٍ جديدة من الأدب؛ مثل ما يطلق عليه أدب المقاومة وأدب المهاجرين. وتبحث المقدمة بإيجاز إمكانية إيجاد بدائل تستوعب الاختلافات التي نتجت عن الاستقطابات الحادة وخاصة في مجتمعات شهدت أكبر نسبة من الهجرة إليها، ودور الأعمال الأدبية لليلي أبو العلا في هذا المجال.
