كان الموت يستنزف بالرمو من بعض أملها وعزمها. عندما اغتيل الجنرال كارلو ألبرتو دالا كييزا، الذي اشتهر بإخضاع الألوية الحمراء في بالرمو سنة 1982، عرضت الصحف جثته المضرجة بالدم، وجثة زوجته الشابة بقربه تحت العنوان الرئيسي: "هنا دفنت آمال أهل بالرمو الشرفاء". ثم سنة 1992 دفنت الأمنيات مجدداً عندما قتل بانفجار سيارات مفخخة جيوفاني فالكوني وبالو بورسيللينو. القاضيان الشجاعان اللذان جلبا المفايا للمحاكمة في أشهر محاكمة دولية.
ولكن في أشد الساعات ظلاماً، ولو لم نكن نعرفه بعد، كان ثمة حياة جديدة تجلجل وتنتظر، وكانت إحدى علاماتها الإعلان الذي كتب بخط اليد بعد استشهاد فالكوني وبورسيللينو: "اليوم بزغ فجر سوف لا يعرف الأفول".
