ناظم هذه الألفية (الوجه الجميل في علم الخليل) هو أبو سعيد شعبان بن محمد القرشي الآثاري الذي تفرد بهذا النوع من المصنفات وهو كتابة الألفيات. فقد نظم ألفية في الخط، وألفية في النحو، وألفية في العروض والقوافي . أعاد صياغة هذه الألفية وشرحها وضبطها الأستاذ هلال ناجي، وجمع فيها لآراء العروضيين الآخرين في هذه المنظومة كما ورد عند مؤلفها، فجاءت متناً علمياً مستوعباً لأجود آراء السابقين بعد طرحها للمناقشة وإثبات ما هو الأجود، ثم إضافة ما ابتكره الناظم (الآثاري) من آراء في علمي العروض والقوافي فضلاً عن احتواء الألفية لعشرات الشواهد العروضية مما خلت منه كتب العروض الأخرى، فكانت جهداً نفيساً يؤرخ لفنون الشعر العربي القديم، فيها من فوائد العروض "لفظاً ومعنى"، وذكراً لأسماء "الدوائر والبحور" وكيفية "الوزن والتقطيع" ، وذكراً لـ "الزحافات" والعلل مفسرة مرتبة على حروف المعجم وكم لكل زحفٍ أو علة من البحور" وقد توزعت على (1054) بيتاً من الشعر، تبدأ بـ :
"الحمد لله على افضاله / أحمده شكراً على نواله وتنتهي بـ "ما دامت الأبحر تجري بالملا / دائرة مسلِّماً محسبسلا". هذا، وقد انتهى المؤلف من كتابة هذه الألفية في شهر جمادي الثاني عام ست وعشرين وثمانمائة للهجرة النبوية".
