يُعد فن التحقيق الصحفي من أبرز الفنون الصحفية المستخدمة في الصحافة الحديثة، وتأتي هذه الأهمية من طبيعة التحقيق الصحفي ونوعية الوظائف التي يقوم بتأديتها، وتميزه عن الفنون الصحفية الأخرى في أنه أكثر قرباً من مشاكل الناس وهمومهم وقضاياهم، إذ يتولى التحقيق الصحفي تسليط الضوء على هذه المشكلات والعمل على عرضها والبحث عن أسبابها والعوامل التي تقف وراءها، ثم السعي نحو تقديم الحلول لها عن طريق سير أغوار هذه المشكلات وتحليلها وتفسيرها، بالإستعانة بآراء الخبراء وأهل الإختصاص من المسؤولين وغيرهم، إضافة إلى ذلك فإن التحقيق الصحفي يمكن أن يتناول الموضوعات الإنسانية ذات الطابع الدرامي، كما أن يمكن أن يتناول أيضاً الموضوعات الطريفة والغريبة والمسلية، ومن هذا فإن التحقيق الصحفي لا يقتصر على نوعٍ واحد فقط؛ إنما ينقسم إلى أنواعٍ عديدة، كما أن موضوعاته تتعدد لتمتد إلى مناحي الحياة كافة، وتتسم الموضوعات التي يتناولها التحقيق الصحفي في العادة بالجدة والحالية؛ إلا أنه يمكن أن يفتح ملفات قديمة لكن بتناول جديد أو برؤية جديدة.
