جمع المؤلف في هذا نصوص من كتاب أبي حاتم السّجستاني (255ه) المفقود الموسوم (لحن العامة) معتمداً على عشرات المجلدات من كتب اللغة والمعاجم ليستخلص منها النصوص التي تؤول إلى كتاب (لحن العامة).
وقبل أن يقدم المؤلف النصوص المجموعة موثقة من مظانها المعتمدة، ومرتبة حسب نظام حروف المعجم قدم توصيفاً تناول فيه توثيق نسبة الكتاب إلى أبي تمام وعنوانه، وموارد هذه النصوص، والمعايير التي اعتمدها في ترجيح نسبتها وتوثيقها.
ويمثل جمع هذه النصوص المتناثرة في كتب اللغة والمعجمات خدمة متواضعة للغة الضاد؛ لأنه يسلط الضوء على كتاب مهم من كتب لحن العامة، الذي تكشف نصوصه عن التغيير الذي لحق بنى الألفاظ العربية ودلالاتها وأصواتها وتراكيبها على مدى القرنين الأول والثاني ومنتصف القرن الثالث للهجرة، ودور العلماء الأفذاذ في مواجهة هذا التغيير الطارىء على لغتنا، وكيفية التعامل معه بوصفه واقعاً لغوياً فرضه التطور الذي طرأ على الحياة العربية في شتى مجالاتها، بما يحفظ للغة العربية سلامتها؛ وذلك بتنقيتها من آثاره التي يمكن أن تلحق الضرر بها.
