لدراسة اللهجات العربية أهمية كبيرة في الدرس اللغوي، التراثي منه والحداثيّ، فقد اهتم العلماء المتقدمون باللهجات العربية أيّما إهتمام، فنرى ذكرها طاغياً على مصنفاتهم، في كتب اللغة، والنحو، والتفسير، والمعاجم، وعلوم القرآن الكريم.
ولقد كان لعلماء اللغة اليد الدولى في بيان لغات العرب، وحفظها، وبيان رأيهم فيها.
لقد حاول الكاتب في هذا البحث، أن يستعين بالسماع في إثبات اللهجات العربية، أو الردّ عليها؛ أو البحث في قضية ذات علاقة بالبحث اللهجي، مستضيئاً ببعض دواوين الشعر العربي، فقد اعتمد على عدد غير قليل من دواوين الشعر العربي، أو عيونه، ولا سيما شعراء عصر ما قبل الإسلام، والشعر المخضرمين، وشعراء العصر الإسلامي، ولم يتجاوز المدّة التي أقرّها العلماء الأوائل في قبول الشاهد اللغوي، فلم يجاوز ابن هرمة الذي ختم به العلماء عصر الإستشهاد، وذلك حفاظاً على الخطّ الذي التزمت به في قبول اللهجات العربية، بشرط السماع، وعدم التوسع بما يدخل ما ليس له دليل يسنده، أو شاهد يدل عليه.
لم تقف هذه الدراسة عند الظواهر اللّهجية المنسوبة وإنما حاولت نسبة كثير من الظواهر اللّهجية لأصحابها، مما أبهم مصنفو لحن العامة نسبته، واجتهدت كثيراً في البحث عن تلك النسبة، كما حصرت الدراسة في ستة قرون لتحديد العمل، وضبطه، وتجنب الإطالة.
