شكل الخطاب محور إهتمام الدارسين، من المتقدمين والمحدثين، فاهتموا به بوصفه حدثاً تبليغياً، يهدف إلى الوصول إلى المخاطب، والتأثير به بوسائل وأدوات شتى، ومن ثم إقناعه بفكرة المرسل، ويعتمد في ذلك التأثير على إستراتيجيات تقارب العقل والمنطق والعاطفة، فتميل القلب والعقل والضمير، وتفعل التأثير والإقناع والإستمالة، بدافع تبني رأي ما أو الإستجابة لطلب معين، أو لتدعيم موقف ما؛ لذلك توجه الدارسون في سنين قليلة خلت إلى الإهتمام بتلك الآليات التي استعملها المخاطب في التأثير على المتلقي، وفحصها، وتحليلها، والكشف عن مواطن القوة والضعف فيها، البحث في الطرائق والآليات التي توفرها اللغة والمنطق والفلسفة وعلم النفس والإجتماع للتأثير على المتلقي، فكانت دراسة اللغة ليست بمعزل عن تلك العلوم، وكان التوجه لدراسة الخطاب بصورة عامة بكل ما يحويه من أبعاد اللغة اللسانية وغير اللسانية.
