كتاب يبحث في علم الحديث الشريف جمع فيه المصنف الأحاديث المشتهرة المتداولة على ألسنة الناس، وقد قام بترتيبها ترتيبا ألفبائيا، وبين درجات هذه الأحاديث إذ منها الصحيح ومنها الحسن ومنها الضعيف ومنها الموضوع المكذوب، وخرجها وبين أماكنها في كتب الأحاديث وهذه طبعة مضبوطة من هذا الكتاب وعليها بعض الحواشي.
ومصنف هذا الكتاب هو إسماعيل بن محمد بن عبد الهادئ بن عبد الغني الشعير بالجراحي (نسبة إلى أبي عبيدة بن الجراح أحد الصحابة العشرة المبشرين بالجنة رضي الله عنهم) الشافعي العجلوني المولد الدمشقي المنشأ والوفاة. كان عالماً بارعاً صالحاً مفيداً محدثاً مبجلاً قدوة سنداً خاشعاً، له يد في العلوم لاسيما الحديث والعربية وغير ذلك مما يطول شرحه ولا يسع في هذه الطروس وصفه، وله القدم الراسخة في العلوم واليد الطولي في دقاق المنطوق والمفهوم.
ولد بعجلون في سنة سبع وثمانين بعد الألف تقريباً، وسماه والده أولاً باسم محمد مدة من الزمان لا تزيد على سنة ثم غير اسمه إلى مصطفى نحو ستة أشهر ثم غير اسمه بإسماعيل واستقر الأمر بهذا الاسم. ثم لما بلغ سن التمييز شرع في قراءة القرآن العظيم حتى حفظه عن ظهر قلبه في مدة يسيرة ثم قدم إلى دمشق وعمره نحو ثلاث عشرة سنة تقريباً لطلب العلم.
ومن أسباب توجهه إلى طلب العلم أنه لما كان في بلاده وكان صغيراً يقرأ في المكتب رأى في عالم الرؤيا أن رجلاً ألبسه خوجة خضراء مركبة على فرو أبيض في غاية الجودة والبياض وقد غمرته لكونها سابغة على يديه ورجليه فأخبر والده بالمنام فحصل له بذلك السرور التام وقال له إن شاء الله يجعل لك يا ولدي من العلم الحظ الوافر ودعا له بذلك.
