كان قيام الثورة الإسلامية، وسقوط نظام حكم الشاه سنة 1979 تحولاً جذرياً في توجه إيران الداخلي والخارجي، ما زالت المنطقة تعيش نتائجه بعد أن مضى عليه أربعة وثلاثون عاماً. تعرضت إيران خلالها لأحداث وتطورات سياسية واقتصادية وثقافية عميقة، ولعمليات تطهير متواصلة في أجهزة الدولة، انتهت بسيطرة التيار الديني المحافظ المتشدد على السلطة فيها. وواجهت إيران حرباً مدمرة دامت ثماني سنوات ونيف مع العراق، وعملية احتواء من الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، وحصاراً اقتصادياً وتكنولوجياً غربياً، وعزلة سياسية فرضتها عليها الولايات المتحدة والإتحاد الأوروبي، وتهديداً بالغزو وبضرب منشآتها النووية وبنيتها التحتية من قبل الولايات المتحدة وإسرائيل. قبلت القيادة الإيرانية هذه التحديات، وصمدت في وجهها، مبدية شجاعة تثير الإعجاب وقدرة على المرونة والتكيف تبعث على الدهشة.
عمدت في هذه الدراسة عن تاريخ إيران الحديث والمعاصر إلى تعريف القارئ العربي بأهم التطورات التي عاشتها إيران في القرن العشرين ومطلع قرننا الحالي، بروح علمية موضوعية بقدر المستطاع، بعيدة عن العصبية المذهبية الكريهة التي بدأت منذ سنوات تتسرب إلى المشرق العربي، يغذيها الإعلام الغربي الخبيث لتمزيق هذه الأمة وتفكيك أوصالها، وبتر علاقاتها مع إيران، تلك العلاقات التاريخية الوثيقة التي لحمتها الإسلام وسداتها المصالح المشتركة بين الأمتين العربية والإيرانية.
