يهتم هذا الكتاب بدراسة مفهوم الحروب الصليبية والمفاهيم الأخرى عند الأوروبيين والمسلمين وعلى العوامل المؤثرة فيها لذا إعتمد الكتاب منهج قوامه أربعة فصول وخاتمة:
تناول الفصل الأول: تطور الحروب الصليبية المصطلح والمفهوم، التطور التاريخي للمصطلحات التي أطلقت على الظاهرة وهي (الحج، الحروب المقدسة، أعمال الفرنجة، الحروب الصليبية) لإيضاح غايات استعمال هذه المفاهيم فضلاً عن تطور إستعمالها ولماذا تخلت لمصطلح الحروب الصليبية في آخر الأمر؟
أما الفصل الثاني ندرس مصادر كتابة تاريخ الحروب عن المسلمين والمنهج الحولي لتقييم المصادر التي إعتمد المسلمون في وصف مجريات الحرب.
ودرس الفصل الثالث: المنهج الموضوعي وكتب التراجم وذلك لمقارنة قيمة معلومات المؤلفات في هذا المنهج مع المنهج الحولي الذي يدرس التواريخ العامة وتواريخ الدول والبلدان وتواريخ الأسر والسيرة الشخصية.
ودرس الفصل الرابع: العوامل المؤثرة في الرؤية لتوضيح لماذا إهتم بعض المؤرخين بالحروب دون غيرهم وتباين هذا الإهتمام بين المؤرخين أنفسهم حتى يستطيع الباحث في التاريخ أن يوضح مدى إدراك المؤرخين أنفسهم حتى يستطيع الباحث في التاريخ أن يوضح مدى إدراك المؤرخين المسلمين للظاهرة الصليبية ومدى تأثير في العوامل الفاعلة في الكتابة التاريخية وهذه العوامل هي: تطور الفكر الإسلامي، التاريخ مفهومه وغاية موضوعه، العامل الجيوسياسي، شخصية المؤرخ والواقع الإجتماعي والوظيفي وأثرها في رؤيته وفي فكره.
