لقد عشنا زمنًا توهمنا خلاله أن أدبنا العربي عسر لا يسر، وكأنه شخصًا متجهم الوجه، مقطب الجبين عابس الملامح، ولكم ظلمنا أدبنا، وأصبح لزامًا علينا أن نعيد النظر في حكمنا عليه بالوعورة، إذ إنه لم يكن عابسًا ولا متجهمًا، وإذا تصفحنا كتب التراث يمكن أن نجد البسمة اللطيفة قد ارتسمت على الشفاه، والعظة البليغة قد سمت بالأرواح، والحكمة العميقة قد استقرت في القلوب، إن أدبنا العربي كم فيه من طرائف جميلة، ومواقف عميقة هي خلاصة تجارب قوم قد صقلتهم الحياة، فعاشوا عصرهم وعبروا عما فيه من مواقف جادة، كما عبروا أيضًا عما فيه من مواقف طريفة، وعبروا كذلك عما شد انتباههم من سلوكيات أقوام ابتليت بهم الحياة كالبخلاء والطفيليين والمتنبئين وغيرهم من طوائف كانوا موضع تندر من حولهم، أو سلوكيات أقوام ازدانت بهم الحياة فتركوا بصماتهم الجليلة وآثارهم الخالدة.
ومواقف خالدة وعتها السنون وورثها الأجيال، وهذا جميعه مما يمكن أن يطلق عليه أدب السمر، وصار يرسل إشعاعات مضيئة كلما وجد من يتيح له فرص التألق والتوهج، ولقد كانت هذه المواقف الطريفة مادة طيبة للمنادمة في مجالس الخلفاء والأمراء، كما كانت وسيلة محببة للمربين في تعاملهم مع طلاب العلم والمعرفة، ولقد خلف تراثنا العديد من هذه المواقف الطريفة والجميلة في الكثير من كتب الأدب واللغة مما يدعونا اليوم إلى إعادة عرض هذه الطرائف التي تؤكد أن أدبنا وتراثنا في حاجة إلى مزيد من التعرف على جوانبه الطريفة والباسمة حتى تتحقق الألفة بين جماهيرنا وهذا التراث.
