يضم هذا الكتاب بين طياته رسالتين الأولى جمعت أسماء من عاش ثمانين سنة بعد شيخة أو بعد سماعه، حيث تم فيها مباعاة التسلسل الزمني، فقد ابتدأ بعصر النبوة، وختم بعصر المؤلف حيث ترجم لشيوخه الذين أخذ عنهم ممن ينطبق عليهم شرط الكتاب. ويبين فيها مدة السماع بالسنين، أو يبين تاريخ أول سماعه وتاريخ وفاته، أما الترجمة فجاءة موجزة نوعاً ما، على غرار طريقة المصنف في كتابه العبر.
أما الرسالة الثانية فهي المقدمة ذات النقاب في الألقاب للإمام الذهبي.
