تأثرت صورة الشرق في المخيلة الغربية إلى حد بعيد بما أنتجته حركة الاستشراق ولطالما لعب الجنس دورا بارزا في خيالات المستشرقين وبحوثهم، وهو ''وصفوا الشرق باعتباره مؤنثا. ثرواته خصبة ورموزه الأساسية هي: المرأة الشهوانية والحريم والحاكم المستبد وحزمة الصور الاستشراقية التي تمثل الشرق مألوفة لما تؤكده من صبة بين الشرق والهتك الجنسي. ومن هذا التأثير الكبير للجنس في تاريخ الاستشراق ظهر مصطلح ''الاستشراق الجنسي '' وهو تعبير محدث يفتح الباب أمام عوالم من الأفكار والأسئلة والخبرات التي تمتد في تاريخ الاستشراق لمئات السنين، وهو بالقدر نفسه يفتح الباب أمام تأمل الصلة، التي لم تكن بهذا الوضوح قبلا، بين الجسد والسياسة، وربما أيضا، الجسد وصورة الذات والآخر في الذهن الغربي (وهو تعبير فيه كثير من التجاوز لوجود عدة أنساق ثقافية تحت مظلة ما يسمى الغرب). وقد اتسعت عباءة الاستشراق لتشمل الجنس بعد أن كان القسم الأكبر من اهتمامه منصبا على القضايا الدينية وما يتصل بها بدءا من تقديم ترجمات أكثر دقة – على الأقل في حدود ما هو معلن- للقرآن الكريم، ولاحقا اتسعت الدائرة لتشمل كل ما يمكن اعتباره مهما في المكتبة العربية، لأجل مزيد من الفهم.
