أبو تمام حبيب بن أوس الطائيّ الشاعر المجيد المتقدم البارع صاحب ديوان الحماسة سابق الشعراء ومخجل الفصحاء الذي طار ذكره في الآفاق وحاز بهِ الشرق بهجة الإشراق وهو أول من كسا معاني الشعر رونقاً جديداً لم تهتدِ إليهِ جماعة المتقدمين وأعجبت بهِ ونسجت على منوالهِ أفواج المتأخرين ودلِّ كتاب الحماسة على غزارة فضلهِ وإتقان معرفتهِ بحسن إختياره وجمعهُ بهمدان في فصل الشتاء بدار وزيرها ولهُ مجموع آخر سمّاه فحول الشعراء جمع فيهِ بين طائفة كبيرة من شعراءِ الجاهلية والمخضرمين والإسلام وكتاب الإختيارات من شعر الشعراء.
هذا الديوان هو من أجلّ الدواوين الشعرية وأشهرها وأجمعها للمعاني الغريبة وأكثرها غير أنهّ لما كان نادر الوجود وكانت النفوس متشوقة إليهِ متشوقة للحصول عليه، وهو مشتمل على ثمانية أبواب الأول في المديح وهو أكثرها والثاني في المراثي والثالث في المعاتبات والرابع في الأوصاف والخامس في الغزل والسادس في الفخر والسابع في الوعظ والزهد والثامن في الهجاء.
