يحفل شعر أوس بن حجر بأخبار القوم وأيامهم ومواقفهم، وتتكشف فيه خبرة الشاعر بأحوال بيئته ومجتمعه، كما تسفر عن حكمته التي كانت ثمرة المعاناة، في عصر لم يعرف سوى التقاليد والأعراف على ما فيها أحياناً من العصبية والجهالة… إلى جانب ذلك فإن ديوانه يعكس ما في شعره من شعر الجاهليين عموماً من المتانة وشدة الأسر وحسن السبك وقوة وقع الكلمة في النفس، وفيه أيضاً سرد وقصص ووصف بارع ينم عن الأصالة والرصانة والبعد عن الاسفاف والابتذال، ولا يخلوا تبعاً لأغراضه من رقة وسهولة ولاسيما في الرثاء والغزل. وفي هذا الإطار فإن لهذا الديوان من قيمة تراثية ونوافذ أدبية حجة لدوره الهام في الكشف عن جذور الشخصية العربية من ناحية، ومعطيات لغة الضاد في إطارها الطبيعي-والتي هي محور هام في الثقافة الإسلامية الرحبة الآفاق-من ناحية ثانية.
