جمعت فى هذا الكتاب أبلغ ما جاء فى كل فن, وأبدع ماروي فى كل نوع من أعلام المعانى وأعيانها إلى عوازيها وشذانها, وتخيرت من ذلك ما اكن جيد النظم محكم الرصف, غير مهلهل رخو, ولا متجعد فج, وهذا نوع من الكلام لا يزال يسأل عنه فى المجالس الحافلة, والمشاهد الجامعة, إذا أريد الوقوف على مبلغ علمه ومقدار حفظه, فإن سبق إليه بلجواب جل قدره وفخم أمره, وإن نكص عن ميدانه, وشال فى ميزانه, قلت الرغبة فيه, وانصرفت القلوب عنه.
وجعلته اثنى عشر باباً:
الباب الأول: فى التهانى, والمديح, والأفتخار.
الباب الثانى: فى الخصال.
الباب الثالث: فى المعاتبات, والهجاء, والاعتذار.
الباب الرابع: فى الغزل وأوصاف الحسان.
الباب الخامس: فى ذكر النار والطبخ, وأنواع الطعام, وصفات الشراب, وما يجري مع ذلك.
الباب السادس: ذكر السماء والنجوم, والشمس والقمر, والليل والصبح, وما يجرى مع ذلك.
الباب السابع: فى ذكر السحاب والمطر, والثلوج والمياه, وصفات البساتين والرياض, والأشجار والثمار, والرياحين والنسيم.
الباب الثامن: فى ذكر السلاح والحرب, وما يشبه ذلك.
الباب التاسع: فى ذكر القلم والخط والكتاب, وصفة البلاغة, وما يجرى مع ذلك.
الباب العاشر: فى ذكر الخيل والأبل, والسير والفلوت, والسرابو وصفة سائر الحيوانات.
الباب االحادى عشر: فى ذكر الشباب والمشيب, والعلل والموت, والمراثى والتعازى, والزهد.
الباب الثانى عشر: فى صفات أشياء مختلفة.
