ليست هذه الدراسة معنيةً يتتبع مصطلح (التلقي) في الدراسات النقدية القديمة والحديثة على نحو موسَّع، إلا ما يُعطي صورة سريعة عنها، غير أنها معنيةً بتطبيقها على شعر (الحوليات) في مرحلةٍ معينةٍ، وهي مرحلة الشعر الجاهلي، على إعتبار أن آثار المدرسة امتدت إلى العصر الحديث، كما يُعنى البحث ببيان أثرها من وجهة نظر القارئ، من خلال تحليل النصوص.
تقوم نظرية التلقي على جوهر أساسي، هو القارئ، إذ عليه إمتصاص المعنى الأدبي الذي يحمله النص، وتبيان هذا المعنى، وقد يكون هذا المعنى مطابقاً للمعنى الذي أودعه المؤلف في النَّص، وبذلك يَفقِد النص قابليته على التأثير وإحداث الدهشة لدى المتلقي، أما إذا كان مخالفاً، لقصد المؤلف، وللمعنى المباشر أو اللغوي والمعنى العام، فإنَّهُ يُحدِث الدهشة، وتظهر قيمة النص، ويُحدث كسراً لأفق توقع القارئ والجمهور، ((فالمطلوب التفاعل مع جوهر النص ومعرفة عالمه الداخلي، لا التأثير السطحي الخارجي، وما قد يثيره من إنفعالات عابرة))، على حد قول الدكتور محمد رضا مبارك.
