يتضمن هذا العمل تحقيق في ديوان ابن سهل الأندلسي، بالاستناد الى مخطوطة للديوان أصلية من المغرب العربي، رتبت قصائدها حسب الترتيب الهجائي المغربي، إضافة الى مصادر أخرى بلغت إحدى عشرة مصدراً اعتمدتها دار صادر في التحقيق للمقارنة مع المصورة الأصلية للمخطوط.
بداية، من هو ابن سهل: هو ابراهيم بن سهل ويكن بأبو اسحاق، الإشبيلي ولد عام 605 هـ، 1208م، كان يهودياً فأسلم، وكان كاتباً وشاعراً وأديباً، له قصائد في الغزل والمديح والرثاء والموشحات، أصله من إشبيلية وسكن سبتة في المغرب، وتوفي عام 649 هـ، 1251 م، حيث كان مع والي سبتة في رحلة في زورق فانقلب بهما ومات غرقاً.
يبدأ الديوان بمقدمة عن حياة ابن سهل والعصر الذي ولد فيه بقلم الدكتور إحسان عباس، يلي ذلك ديوان الشاعر مرتباً على حروف الهجاء مما عني بترتيبه وتهذيبه ابن الدهان، وهي النسخة الأصلية للمخطوط، وجاءت على بحور الشعر العربي / شعر التفعيلة المقضى.
في نظرة الى شعر وموشحات ابن سهل الأندلسي يقول الدكتور إحسان عباس: ".. أكثر ما بقي من شعر ابن سهل يقع في موضوعين كبيرين هما المدح والغزل، وأقله يتصل بالهجاء، والرثاء ووصف الطبيعة والمراسلات الإخوانية، ولو وضعناه في "رقعة" عصره لوجدنا أنه لم يستهلك قريحته في تطلب الصور المولدة أو الجديدة، تلك فتنت صديقه ابن سعيد، وعدَّ منها قوله: أعلامه السود إعلام بسؤدده... كأنها فوق ضد الملك خيلان وفي المديح يقول: والفجر يكتب في صحيفة أفقية... ألفاً محت نور الهلال المُذهبا...".
هذا الكتاب، تكشف صفحاته عن تاريخ حافل بالحماسة والمجازفة، من جانب، ومن جانب آخر سمات الشعر الأندلسي بكل ما يمتاز به من رقة وجمال وخيال بديع وموسيقى عذبة تفرد بها ابن سهل الأندلسي.
