يقع مخطوط الكشف والبيان عن أوصاف خصال شرار أهل الزمان، لمؤلفه محمد الحافظ بن حسين الصيداوي النجار، بين أدب المواعظ والأخلاق والتاريخ، جمع فيه صاحبه ثقافة أدبية ودينية واسعة، مكنته من صوغ النص بلغة محكمة منضبطة، وبطريقة منظمة. يأخذنا الصيداوي في "كشفه" إلى دمشق النصف الأول من القرن الثامن عشر، ويصلنا بها حتى عام 1172هـ (1758م)؛ الناس والمدينة هما مدار التأليف، بحثًا من المؤلف عن المجتمع الأمثل والزمان الخالي من الفساد. لكن البحث عن شكل أفضل للمجتمع ليس الباعث الوحيد على التأليف، فدمشق - كما يبدو مما كتبه المؤلف - تستحق زمانًا أفضل مما كانت عليه في عصره الذي جعل الناس سبب سوئه، وهي عنده الظرف والناس هم المظروف، فإن صلح المظروف صلح زمان المدينة، لذلك نجده يذكّر بدمشق وفضلها وفضائلها. ما ميز مخطوط الكشف والبيان في أوانه، لغته السليمة، وقربه من المجتمع بصفته نصًّا اجتماعيًا عنوانه المدينة والتفاعل والتجارب الإنسانية بين ناسها عمومًا، وهو مدوّن بمستويات عدة من الإخبار عن الرواة، كما أنه متعدد المصادر، ينقل عنها بأمانة في صيغ عدة.
