يعد كتاب "نزهة النظر" لأمير المؤمنين في الحديث، الحافظ ابن حجر، من خير ما أُلِّفَ في علم مصطلح الحديث، فمنذُ تأليفِه انكبَّ العلماءُ وطلبةُ العلم عليه مطالعةً وحفظاً، ودرساً وتدريساً، فقنعوا به ولم يبتغوا سواه، وذلك لجودة تصنيفه، ودقَّة تعاريفه، وبراعة تأليفه؛ إذ إنه اعتمدَ على طريقة مبتكرة في التأليف، لم يُسبق إليها في هذا الفن، وهي طريقة السَّبر والتقسيم، وهي طريقةٌ تحتاج إلى إطلاع واسع، وذاكرةٍ قويَّة، وذكاء خارج، بحيث استطاع أنْ يربَط جميع مباحث علم مصطلح الحديث مع بعضها البعض في سلكٍ واحد، كأنه بناءٌ مرصوص، كل لَبِنَة في مكانها الصحيح.

وهذا الكتاب على وجازته وإختصاره، قد احتوى على عُصارة علم مصطلح الحديث، بأسلوب رَصِين، ومنهجٍ فريد، وتعاريف دقيقة، فهو يعتبر بمثابة المرحلة الأخيرة التي نضجَ فيها علم المصطلح، فاستقرَّ العلماء والمحدِّثون بعده على تعريفاته، واكتفوا بتقريراته وتحريراته، فكان لهذا المختصر الأثر البالغ في تحديد الإصطلاحات وإستقرارها، على مَن جاء بعده.
