لقد اعتنى العلماء أشد اعتناء بحديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم, فأولوه- بعد القرآن- الاهتمام البالغ, فنقلوه إلينا بأمانة الثقات وحديث التواتر، وذبوا الكذب والخلل عن الحديث النبوي بما وضعوه من قوانين للرواية، هي أصح وأدق طريق علمي في نقل الروايات واختبارها، وقد جمعت هذه القوانين لتكون علماً من أهم العلوم الإسلامية وعلم مصطلح الحديث.
هذا العلم الذي مر في نشأته وتطوره في مراحل عدة، حيث قام العلماء الثقات بتدوينه ودراسته والتأليف فيه، حيث لم يكن هذا العلم الضخم غاية في ذاته، بل وسيلة لضبط النصوص الحديثية من حيث صحة وصولها إلينا وفهمها، ثم الثقة بأنها أقوال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأفعاله ونحو ذلك. ولتكون بدورها المرجع في عقيدة المسلم وعبادته ومعاملاته وسلوكه. وقد كان ابن حجر من الذين اعتنوا بهذا العلم وأنتج الكم الهائل من المصنفات في خدمة هذا العلم، وشهد له الأعداء قبل الأصدقاء، بأنه من ذوي الفضل في هذا البحر الكبير.
