إن كمال الإنسان هو بحصول المعارف الإلهية وإدراك الكمالات الربانية، ولا معلوم أكمل من واجب الوجود تعالى والعلم به أكمل من كل مقصود وإنما يتم بعلم الكلام. وقد اجتهد مصنف الكتاب الإمام الطوسي لإزالة الالتباس بالنظر الصحيح في البراهين. وقد استفاد العلامة الحلي من هذا المصنف في ما ورد فيه من العلوم الإلهية والمعارف العقلية حيث جُمعت فيه حل مسائل الكلام في هذا العلم فقام بشرحه لمن غمض عليه ما ورد في هذا الكتاب القيم. وقد جاء الكتاب مرتباً على ستة مقاصد: الأول في الأمور العامة وفيه فصول في الوجود والعدم والثاني في الماهية ولواحقها والثالث في العلة والمعلول والمقصد الثاني في الجواهر والأعراض وفيه فصول: الأول في الجواهر والثاني في الأجسام والثالث في بقية أحكام الأجسام والرابع في الجواهر المجردة والخامس في الأعراض. المقصد الثالث في إثبات الصانع وفيه فصول الأول في وجوده تعالى الثاني في صفاته تعالى والثالث في أفعاله تعالى، المقصد الرابع في النبوة وفيه مسائل، المقصد الخامس في الإمامة وفيه مسائل، المقصد السادس في المعاد وفيه مسائل.
