ما المقصود بالكون هنا؟ إنه بلا شك مفهوم واسع ومعقد ولكن ما نقصده هنا هو المكان والزمان الموجودين في الفضاء الخارجي والقابلين للمراقبة والرصد والمشاهدة والخاضعين للقياس ولقوانين طبيعة وفزيايئية جوهرية، دون أن يكون فيه عناصر مطلقة، أي هو ذلك الجزء المرئي والملموس والمكون من مجموعة من الأكداس والحشود من المجرات الصغيرة والكبيرة، القريبة والبعيدة جداً، والتي تعد بالمليارات، وفي كل مجرة هناك مليارات النجوم والكواكب وغيرها من الأجرام والغازات والأغبرة الكونية، وما شمسنا سوى نجم صغير ومتواضع من بين 200 مليار نجمة في مجرتنا درب التبانة وحدها وربما أكثر من ذلك بكثير فهذا مجرد رقم تقديري، وكوكبنا ليس سوى حبة صغيرة ملحقة تدور في فلك الشمس من بين مليارات الكواكب السيارة التي يعج بها الكون، ولا تزيد عن جزء من مليار من قطرة ماء مقارنة بكميات مياه البحار والمحيطات في الأرض برمتها.
ومن هنا برز مفهوم مصطلح الانفجار العظيم big bang، عندما كان الكون لامتناهي في صغره ولامتناهي في كثافته. وإذا قبلنا وجود "حالة ما قبل البيغ بانغ أي الانفجار العظيم، ثابتة ومستقرة للكون، فهذا يعني بنظر القديس أوغسطين أن هناك كائن لم تكن توجد أية ضرورة فيزيائية للتغير بدون محفز أو حافز عملي نسبه أوغسطين إلى الله. ثم جاءت النظريات العلمية في الفيزياء الفلسكية لتقدم البديل العلمي للطرح والتفسير الثيولوجي أو الديني. وستكون هذه الأطروحات والمواضيع هي محتوى الكتاب مطروحة باختصار وتبسيط شديد قدر الإمكان لتكون أقرب للفهم والاستيعاب من قبل الجميع.
