يقول أبو علي البغدادي في مقدمته: "لما رأيت العلم أنفس بضاعة، أيقنت أن طلبه أفضل تجارة؛ فاغتربتُ للرواية، ولَزِمتُ العلماء للدراية؛ ثم أعملتُ نفسي في جمعه، وشغلت ذهني بحفظه؛ حتى حويتُ خطيره، وأحرزت رفيعه، ورويت جليله، وعرفتُ دقيقهُ؛ وعقلتُ شارده، ورويت نادره، وعلمتُ غامضه، ووعيت واضحه (...) فأمللت هذا الكتاب من حفظي في الأخمسة بقرطبة، وفي المسجد الجامع بالزهراء المباركة؛ وأودعته فنوناً من الأخبار، وضروباً من الأشعار، وأنواعاً من الأمثال، وغرائب من اللغات؛ على أني لم أذكر فيه باباً من اللغة إلا أشبعته، ولا ضرباً من الشعر إلا اخترته، ولا فناً من الخبر إلا انتخلته، ولا نوعاً من المعاني والمثل إلا استجدتُه ...
هذا وقد ذيل المؤلف كتاب الأمالي بـ "الذيل والنوادر" وكتاب "التنبيه" لأبي عبيد البكري، وكذلك كتاب التنبيه على أوهام أبي علي القالي في أماليه مرفقاً بفهارس أبجدية بأسماء الأعلام والقبائل والأماكن وقوافي الأبيات وغير ذلك ...
