اهتم المؤرخون منذ العصور الإسلامية الأولى بتاريخ مكة المكرمة؛ لما لها من مكانة عظيمة، كونها مهبط الرسالة، وقد تنوعت التصانيف المؤلِّفة عن مكة المكرمة، فمنها ما كتب عن تاريخها سواءً السياسي أو الإجتماعي أو الثقافي، ومنها ما كتب عن فضائلها وأحكامها، ومن تلك المصنفات ما عُني بتراجم أعلام مكة المكرمة.
ومن هنا، أتى هذا الكتاب الذي تتبّع سيرة أحد الأعلام المتأخرين في مكة المكرمة، وهو الشيخ عبد الستّار بن عبد الوهاب الدهلوي، متتبعاً أخباره، ومنقباً عما كتبه وقام بنسخه.
لقد اعتمد البحث واستمدّ معلوماته من مصادر أصلية، وقد شكّلت مكتبة الشيخ عبد الستّار الدهلوي الخطيّة المحفوظة بمكتبة الحرم المكي الشريف، المصدر الرئيس لهذا البحث من الناحيتين الشخصية والعلمية.
ويُمثِّل هذا البحث الدراسة الأولى الشاملة لسيرة الشيخ عبد الستّار الدهلوي بجانبيها الشخصي والعلمي، ولعلّه يكون خير مُعين لدارسي تُراث الشيخ عبد الستّار الدهلوي لاحقاً.
