هذا كتاب ذكر فيه المؤلف "الإمام أبو القاسم الحسن بن بشر الآمدي"، المؤتلف والمختلف والمتقارب في اللفظ والمعنى والمتشابه الحروف في الكتابة من أسماء الشعراء وأسماء آبائهم وأمهاتهم وألقابهم مما يفصل بينه الشكل والنقط واختلاف الأبنية. وإنما ذكر من الأسماء والألقاب ما كانت له نباهة وغرابة وكان قليلاً في تسميتهم وتلقيبهم وكانوا إذا ذكروه ذكروه مفرداً عن اسم الأب والقبيلة لشهرته.
وجعلته على حروف المعجم إذا كان الحرف الأول من الاسم أصلياً كان فيه أو داخلاً للبناء ليقرب متناوله ويسهل على الملتمس طلبه ممن عرف الاشتقاق ومن لم يعرفه. وجعل الأسمين إذا كانا على صورة واحدة وحروفهما مختلفة في باب واحد ليعرفنا ويفرق بينهما بالنقط والشكل، وجعل الباب للأشهر منهما. وأدخل الذي ليس بمشهور عليه مثل (النعيت) بالنون أدخله في باب (البعيث) ومثل (بريد) بالباء مضمومة أدخله مع (يزيد) في باب الياء، فإن الائتلاف والاختلاف يعرفان ويصحان إذا كانا في موضع واحد.
