تُعتبر حنّه آرنت من الفلاسفة القلائل غير الملتزمات وغير المتقيّدات بالأعراف والتقاليد، فهي من بين النسوة اللاتي تمرّدن على الوضعية الدنيا التي أراد المجتمع الذكوري أن يجزّ فيها المرأة.
ولكنها، لا تعتبر نفسها فيلسوفة، رغم معاشرتها لمدّة طويلة لأستاذها هيدغير، بل ترى في نفسها أستاذة للنظريات السياسية، واضعة في ذلك العديد من المؤلفات أهمّها "أصول الكليانية" (1951)، و"منزلة الإنسان المعاصر" (1958)، و"أزمة الثقافة" (1961)، ومحاكمة "أيخمان في القدس" (1963) الذي أثار جدلاً كبيراً.
إنّ تمشي حنه آرنت في الفلسفة السياسية لا يخضع إلى الأنماط التقليدية، فهي تحاول دوماً التعمّق في كلّ ما يتصل بالحياة اليومية، محللة جميع الجوانب المتعلقة بها، وبالخصوص الحياة العامة في الفضاءات العمومية، معتمدة في ذلك على أعمال العديد من سابقيها مثل هيدغير، وياسبارس، وكذلك أفلاطون، وأرسطو، وأوغسطينيوس، وتوما الأنكوني، ودونس سكوت، وصولاً إلى كانط وهيغل ونيتشه.
قبل وفاتها في ديسمبر 1975، شرعت حنّه آرنت سنة 1973، في إطار تعميق أفكارها ومقاربتها السياسية، في إلقاء سلسلة من الدروس حول "حياة العقل"، تناولت فيها العلاقة المتينة بين النظري والتطبيقي، إذ كانت ترى أنّ تغيير العالم لا يتمّ إلا بفهمه؛ وكانت تنوي جمعها في ثلاث مجلدات، كلّ واحد منها يتناول موضوعاً مستقلاً.
وقد ظهر من هذا العمل الضخم، إثر وفاتها، جزءان: الأوّل منهما بعنوان "الفكر" (1978)، وهو محلّ هذه الترجمة، والثاني مستقل بذاته تحت عنوان "الإرادة" (1981)، وقد ترجمتهما إلى الفرنسية لوسيان لوترنجار (1981- 1983)، أمّا الثالث والذي كان يُفترض أن يحمل عنوان "إبداء الرأي" فلم يتسن جمعه.
ترى حنّه آرنت، من خلال كتاب "الفكر" في "حياة العقل"، أنّ الفكر مدعوّ إلى عدم اللجوء للتأمل فقط، بل وكذلك بالعمل على تغيير الحياة العامة والأحداث، مبدية في نفس الوقت مخاوفها من ممتهني الفكر مثل الفلاسفة الذين يتحالفون في نهاية الأمر مع الدكتاتوريين، على غرار أفلاطون وهيدغير، مؤكدة على ضرورة أن يكون الفكر حرّاً، ومسؤولاً في نفس الوقت.
