هذا "شرح المعلقات العشر وأخبار شعرائها" صنعة الشيخ أحمد الشنقطي يقدم بحلة قشيبة، وهو شرح فذ من شروح المعلقات من حيث منهجه، وأسلوبه، ولقد كثر الحديث عن قصة المعلقات، أهي حقيقة واقعة أم أسطورة مختلفة؟ واختلف في عددها، فمن قائل: هي (4) وآخر (7)، وثالث (9) واختلف أيضاً في أسماء أصحابها، وطبقاتهم. ومهما يكن تبقة المعلقات غرة الشعر العربي، تتربع على عرش الشعر العربي، وهي المنهل لكل طامئ، وهي الصوى لكل سيار إلى ديوان العرب.
والشنقيطي هو أحمد الأمين عالم بالأدب، من أهل "شنقيط". نزل بالقاهرة، وتوفي بها. ومن آثاره: 1-الدرر اللوامع على همع الهوامع، شرح جمع الجوامع. 2-طهارة العرب. 3-المعلقات العشر وأخبار قائليها. 4-الوسيط في تراجم أدباء شنقيط. وقد اعتنى الشيخ الشمقيطي بجمع شرح المعلقات العشر وتصحيحه، للمرة الأولى، وسماها المعلقات، أو القصائد العشر الطوال، وهو هذا الكتاب.
لقد وفق الشيخ أحمد بن الأمين الشنقيطي إلى منهج محكم في شرح المعلقات العشر، وقد جاء شرحه للمعلقات جامعاً مانعاً لشروحات المعلقات من حيث اختلاف الروايات.
وقد قام منهجه على النحو الآتي: 1-بيان أنساب أصحاب المعلقات، من خلال ذكر أخبارهم وترجمتهم ترجمة وافية. 2-ذكر اختلاف الروايات للمعلقات ونسب ذلك لرواتها بدقة علمية فائقة. وقد غلب هذا الجانب تغليباً ظاهراً في المعلقات السبع الأولى على شرح الغريب من اللغة. 3-الكلام إلى غريب اللغة وما يحتاجه القارئون من المسائل النحوية. 4-الاعتماد على شرح التبريزي خاصة في شرح المعلقات الثلاث الأخيرة.
