المعلقات هي من أشهر ما كتب العرب، وهي أروع وأنفس ما قيل في الشعر العربي القديم، ويقال أن هذه القصائد كانت تكتب بماء الذهب وتعلق على أستار الكعبة قبل مجيء الإسلام، وهي قصائد نفيسة ذات قيمة كبيرة، بلغت الذروة في اللغة، وفي الخيال والفكر، وفي الموسيقى، ولم يصل الشعر العربي إلى ما وصل إليه في عصر المعلقات من غزل امرؤ القيس، وحماس المهلهل، وفخر إبن كلثوم إلا بعد مخاض طويل من الإعداد والتكوين البليغ من حيث اللغة، والثقافة، والأخلاق. يجمع هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه تراجم لأصحاب المعلقات، من حيث نسبة الشاعر، وطبقته في الشعر، ومكانته بين الشعراء، مع مقاطع طويلة من شعر المعلقات لكل من: امرىء القيس وطرفة بن العبد وزهير بن أبي سلمى وللبيد بن ربيعة، ولعمرو بن شداد، وللنابغة الذبياني وآخرون.
من المعلقة التاسعة للشاعر النابغة الذبياني نقرأ: ،" يا دار مية بالعلياء فالسند / أقوت وطال عليها سالِفُ الأبدِ ، وقفت فيها أصيلا ًكي أسائلها / عيت جواباً وما بالربع من أحد، إلا الأواري لأياً ما أُبيّنها / والنؤي كالحوض بالمظلومة الجلد ( ...)".
