في كل مساء كان شبان المدينة يتسلقون سفح الجبل ليطلوا في سمته على قصر ابنة السلطان.. ذلك القصر المشيد على تل صغير يتوسط قلب بحيرة زرقاء تحيط بالقصر من جهاته الأربع. تسلق عبد الله سفح الجبل حتى راوده حلم يقظة.. "ما الحياة إلا تسلق جبال وصولاً إلى قمة لا تتسع لأكثر من شخص واحد.. أو سمت جبل يطل منه الجميع على قصر منيف تمتلكه إبنة السلطان..
أو..". تعرّف عبد الله على بعض شبان المدينة فشنفوا مسامعه بحكاية إبنة السطان. "اسم إبنة السلطان جلنار.. تعيش جلنار في ذلك القصر المنيف مع وصيفاتها فقط. وكل شروط الزواج منها أن يعبر المحب هذه البحيرة سباحة وهي الماهولة بأسماك القرش والحيتان."
