يعرض المؤلف "محمود محمد بابللي" في هذا البحث وجهة نظرة المستمدة من الكتاب والسنة وسيرة الصحابة الكرام في مشروعية القتال في الإسلام. وهذا العرض يشمل بيان تشديد الإسلام في عدم جواز قتل النفس الإنسانية، بغير حقّ، وأن من قتل نفساً واحدة فكأنما قتل الناس جميعاً، وهذا في القتل الفردي، أما في القتل الجماعي أو في الحروب التي تستعر بين فئتين من الناس، وهم على عقيدة واحدة، أو على خلاف في العقيدة وكل من هاتين الفئتين تتصور أنها على حق، وأن خصمه هو المعتدي، أو هو الذي يحول دون وصول صاحب الحق إلى حقّه)، فإن هذا الاقتتال لا يقره الشرع الإسلامي إلا في حالات الاقتضاء التي تدفع بالمسلمين إلى الذود عن حياضهم، أو الدفاع عن معتقدهم وأنفسهم، أو التصدي لمن يحول دون نشر الدعوة الإسلامية بين الناس بالحسنى، لأن الأصل في الشريعة الإسلامية هو السلام، ما لم يقم أحد بالاعتداء على المسلمين بمختلف أنواع الاعتداءات... فعند ذلك يجب على الفئة المعتدى عليها أن تنتصر لنفسها، وأن تتجنب الإفراط في الردّ على العدو، فيما إذا تمكنت منه.. وقد أذن ربّ العالمين بالقتال للفئة المؤمنة التي صبرت على الظلم، لأن خصومهم قد تجاوزوا الحدود في العدوان عليهم. وقد تناول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب العديد من الموضوعات التي تكشف عن إنسانية القتال في الإسلام فيما بين المسلمين وبين خصومهم.
