فَتَح الضَّبِّيُّ للأُدَباءِ بَابَ الإختيارات الشِّعْرِيةِ في مُفضلياته وذلك بإختيار أحسن ما وقعت عليه ذائقته الأدبية، ثم تابعه الأصمعي في أصمعيَّاته، وبعد أن رأى الأدباء إقبال العلماء عليها، وإستحسانهم هذا الفنَّ، ومدى إعجاب الناس لمثل هذه الإختيارات، وخاصةً حماسةُ أبي تمَّام التي شغلتهم شرحاً وترتيباً، لم يخلُ عصرٌ ولا فترةٌ من الفتراتِ من هذه الإختيارات، فزخرت المكتبات بمثل هذه الإختيارات على أيدي عُلماء كبارٍ، وبقدر ما تتضمنه هذه الإختيارات من رائقِ الأشعار، ومطرب الأسماع، ومن مستحسن القول، وجيِّدِ النَّظْمِ، وبقدر ما تزخرُ به من إختيارات تخدمُ أشعار الشعراء، وتضيف شيئاً لمضامين من قامت دواوينهم على الجمع والتنقيب بعد أن فقدت تلك الدواوين ضمن ما فُقِد من تراثِ الأمة، فكانت هذه الإختيارات في عصرنا الحاضر مجالاً خَصْباً، وميداناً واسعاً لجامعي الدواوين ومستخرجي الأشعار، وهي كذلك تعدُّ من المصادر المهمِّة في التعرف والوقوف على أشعارٍ وقطع لأدباء وعُلماء وفقهاء ينذر شعرهم، ويقل ذكرهم إلا في مثل هذا الفن.
وقد استمر قيام الإختيارات الشعرية حتى العصر الحديث، وآخِرُها ما اختاره الشاعر المصري الكبير محمود البارودي، المعروفة بإسم "مختارات البارودي".
وهذا الكتاب المحقق هو أحد هذه الإختيارات الشعرية المتعارف على فنِّها، اشتمله الأديبُ والشاعر المصري الكبير عبد العظيم بن أبي الإصبع العدواني كأحد الأدباء الذين قاموا بعملِ مؤلفٍ قائمٍ على الإختيار الشعريِّ بإختلاف مُسمِّياته.
