لاوتسه هو حكيم صيني مترجمة أعماله إلى كل اللغات رغم بساطة حكمه، والتي قد كتبها بما يشبه الشعر إلا أنها تضم في محتواها أعمق الأفكار ويعتبر في التاريخ الطاوي أعظم من يستحق التمجيد.
عمل كأمين مكتبة الإمبراطور وخازن الأرشيف الإمبراطوري، وحينها اكتسب الكثير من المعارف نتيجة لإطلاعه على المؤلفات القديمة والتي يعود تاريخها إلى ما قبل عام 2697 قبل الميلاد، وقبل حكم الإمبراطور الأصفر، ولكن بمرور الوقت شعر لاوتسه بأن السنين القادمة ستجلب معها الكثير من الإنحطاط الروحي والفوضى.
لذا قرّر ترك العالم والإعتزال ليعيش وحيداً ومنسجماً مع البيئة والطبيعة، وامتطى جاموساً عابراً به الأراضي القاحلة أو الأنهار على السواء ومتجهاً إلى الغرب، ولكن عندما وصل نقطة الحدود في منطقة (هان كو) طلب منه الموظّف المسؤول عن نقطة العبور تدوين حكمه وأشعاره في كتاب.
وما بين أيدينا هو تلك المجموعة من الأشعار والتي عرفت منذ ذلك الوقت باسم (طاو تي جنك) (TAO THE CHING) لكن لاوتسه استمر في ترحاله وبقي يشارك الجميع حكمته يعلم ويتعلّم ويكتسب الخبرات وجمعت كل تلك التعاليم في مجلدات ولم يبقَ منها سوى مجلد (هوا هو جنك) (HUA HU CHING).
إنّ عدد الحكم هو 81 حكمة مكتوبة بأسلوب أقرب إلى النثر، اختار منها المترجم ما وجده مؤثراً ومدعاة إهتمام القارئ بالإضافة إلى تشابه وتردد نفس الأفكار في أغلب الحكم بصيغ مختلفة، من شعاره نقرأ: "الطاو ممر الحقيقة البارعة... لا يعبر عنه بالكلمات... وما تعبر عنه الكلمات... ما هو إلاّ إدراك تصوري... رغم ما أطلق على الطاو من نعوت... فالحقيقة البارعة بعيدة عن الوصف".
