في عام 1995 كنت مشغولًا بتاريخ مصر الوسيط وخاصة الفترة المملوكية، وعلى الرغم من أننا كنا- ونحن طلاب- كنا ندرس فترة دولة المماليك على أنها دولة بدأت عظيمة وانتهت فاسدة، إلا أن تعبير "سلطان مملوكي" أو "أمير مملوكي" كان ملتبسًا لطالب صغير السن لم يكن يفهم ما معنى أن يكون السلطان أو الأمير مملوكًا، وعندما قرأنا بتعمق أكثر عن هذه الفترة من تاريخ مصر كانت المفارقة هي أن مصر والمصريين كانوا التجمع البشري الوحيد في العالم الذي اشترى بالأموال التي كان يتم جمعها مكوسًا وضرائب وجزية عبيد أرقاء من بلاد بعيدة ليصبح هؤلاء العبيد بعد فترة وجيزة. هي فترة تدريب هؤلاء الأرقاء وانخراطهم في جيوش المماليك- طبقة أرستقراطية عسكرية متفردة ومتميزة عن أحرار الشعب المصري الذي اشتراهم بماله.
ففكرة أن يمتلك شعب كامل رقيقًا يتحولون إلى طبقة أرستقراطية تحكم الأحرار كان استثناءًا فريدًا في تاريخ مؤسسة الرق وهي مؤسسة متوحشة قامت على دماء ودموع مئات الملايين من البشر عبر التاريخ، بشر لم يكن لهم ذنب في شيء إلا أنهم وقعوا أسرى أو ولدوا أرقاء لأسياد استرقوهم بمباركة مؤسسات الحكم والدين في كل العصور، وهي مؤسسات باركت على الدوام استرقاق الإنسان للإنسان بل وجعلت خضوع الرقيق لسيده جزءًا من العقيدة الدينية للرقيق ومجرد تفكيره في التمرد على وضعه سببًا للعنة والخروج من الدين بل وفقد الأمل في حياة طيبة في الآخرة بعد أن فرض عليه أن يتجرع العذاب صابرًا وصامتًا في الحياة الأولى من إنسان آخر لمجرد أن النظام الاجتماعي ميزه بينهما بأن السيد مالك والرقيق مملوك.
