في مجموعته الشعرية "قنَاص في مضيق" يقف الشاعر زاهر السالمي عند صدى الماضي في اقترانه بأسئلة الحاضر وتزامن هذين المحمولين مع دراماتيكية الحدث التاريخي ورؤية الإنسان، وتترسخ هذه العلاقة من خلال الرموز المتعددة التي يثورها الوعي الجدلي للشاعر محتفياً بلغته الصدرية، وبكل ما توفره الذات الشاعرة من رؤى محلية متداخلة مع الرؤى الحضارية في مضمون القصيد "حيث الصحراء/ الصحراء في كل مكان/ مشيت طويلاً وظلي فوقي/ أناملي خيوط ماء/ يقتفي أثرها/ الجانحون إلى/ الطوفان".
إن رؤية الشاعر عنا تزاوج بين نمطية الماضي في إبراز معالم المكان (الصحراء) وبعض الشفرات الأخرى التي تبوح بالإحتفاء بالماضي، وبذلك تتجانس الدلالة الكلية في تشاكلها محمول الزمكان. فهي الحقيقة التي يراها الشاعر في حلمه ولكن بلا جدوى "بلا جدوى/ يتدلى/ رأس المدينة/ إلى البحر/ حينما الطيران/ كان/ الحلم الأكثر تكراراً/ كنت أحتاج فقط/ أن أنشر ذراعي، وأترك جسدي للريح".
تضم المجموعة "قنَاص في مضيق" ستة وثلاثون قصيدة في الشعر العربي الحديث نذكر من عناوينها: "معبد"، "مروَض الريح"، "مدينة"، "طوفان"، "برابرة"، "وجود"، "همس"، "بلاد"، "الطعام المقدس"، (...) وقصائد أخرى.
