(معك خمسة يا الأخ) عبارة اعتاد قولها "عصيفير الريحان" هو واحد من سلالة امتهنت البحث عن أي شيء في شوارع "العيناء" وحواريها، وبيوتها المنسية لفرط عناء تكابده، في البحث عن لقمة العيش. قدره أن يكون متسول إبن متسول وأم متسولة أيضا؛ في مدينة تعج بالتموجات والتداخلات المتناقضة بين الغنى الفاحش والفقر المدقع.
تقول الرواية إشكالية العلاقة بين الظروف والإنسان. فهذا الإنسان مهما أوتي من القدرات والإمكانات هو نتاج الظروف، وتغيرها ولا بد أن ينعكس تغييراً في سلوكه وتصرفاته، ولكن في هذه الرواية تنحدر الشخصيات إلى الأسوأ حيث ينتهي طاهر الإبن إلى الشحاذة، والأم إلى الرذيلة، والأب "عصيفير" إلى الإنتحار.
وهكذا ما بين الأحياء الفقيرة والتفاصيل الصغيرة للأمكنة والأزمنة، تستقصي الرواية تفاصيل الفاقة والبحث عن القوت للخروج من مأزق الحياة الخانق.
يقول الراوي " .. للفقر حرز الضد وللفقراء سلالات لا تهرم. كابراً عن كابر صغار أمام الحاجة. من يتضور جوعاً أشد صبراً على بلائه من ذوي عاطفة ممزقة ومهترئة لا يتيقنون بشيء ولا يعرفون لهم أي هدف في الحياة. فعائلة عصيفير وجدت لتتسول ولتضيف رقما جديدا في سجلات فقراء العيناء الذين يتكاثرون بشكل لافت ...".
