تتميز رواية جرف الخفايا بلغتها التي أراد لها الكاتب أن تكون منسجمة مع أجواء الرواية التي تدور أحداثها في مدينة ربما كانت من صنع خيال الراوي وهي مدينة تستيقظ "عادة على أحداث وحوادث متفرقة. إطلاق نار، سطو مسلح وغير مسلح". وهي مدينة تمارس الخفاء وتلعب مع أهلها ألعاباً مختلفة.
ولعل ما يزيد في غموض هذه المدينة وغرابتها، تلك الخصومة الخفية التي نشبت بين "صقر المعنى" وما يمثله أو يرمز إليه، وبين صاحب الدبابة حيث تتخذ أبعاداً لا يمكن التحكم بها، وصقر المعنى هذا كان تائهاَ في معالم المدينة، إلا أن هناك من وجد فيه مقومات فنان متميز لكنه يحتاج إلى متابعة. وقد أطلق عليه رفاقه لقب المعنى، أنهم رأوا العناء مرتسماً في ملامحه فعلاً لكن صقراً هذا غاب فجأة إذ لم يعثر عليه أحد وقد ترك هذا لعزاً محيراُ حاول الكثيرون حله لكنهم لم يتمكنوا من ذلك بسهولة وقد ظلت سيرة صقلا المعنى تتردد على لسان الراوي تلك السيرة التي حيرت رفاقه وأهله.
