لا يخفى على القارئ ما للجهاز الهضمي ولأعضائه المختلفة من أهمية كبرى بالنسبة لمقومات الحياة نفسها على الصعيد الوظيفي والمرضي، ولطالما تردد على مسامع كل منّا القول المأثور: "المعدة ليست الداء، والحمية رأس الدواء..." كما أنه لا يخفى أيضاً ما يعترى الإطار الحقيقي لأغلب أمراضه في أوساطنا الشعبية من مفاهيم مغلوطة توارثناها بشكل خاطئ كمبادئ طبية لأجيال سالفة لا يزال البعض يتناقلونها دون تصحيح، ويعتبرونها قناعات ثابتة فيتبارون في كل سانحة وبإعطاء الرأي عن أسباب هذه الأمراض، ويقدمون النصائح العلاجية والوصفات المختلفة، التي لا يمكن أن لن تكون لها صفة الشمول من حيث المبدأ الطبي والعلمي، ولا يجوز، بالتالي تطبيقها على جميع المرضى. ولما كانت المعالجة وتقديم النصيحة لهما من اختصاص الطبيب المتخصص لذلك عني الدكتور "أحمد عز الدين" وهو طبيب متخصص في أمراض الجهاز الهضمي بوضع هذه الدراسة التي بين أيدينا، والتي اكتفى فيها بالبحث في هذا الموضوع بإطاره العام، وذلك عبر حديثه عن أهم الأمراض التي تصيب الجهاز الهضمي، متوقفاً عند الأمراض الرئيسية لكل مرض، بالإضافة إلى عواملها المسببة واشتراكاتها السيئة، هذا وقد حاول المؤلف في مجمل الكتاب المزج بين الأسلوب العلمي الرصين وسلاسة الموضوع وسهولة فهمه لكي يستطيع كل مثقف وكل مريض أن يستفيد منه الفائدة المرجوة.
ولتحقيق هذه الغاية قدم المؤلف كل باب من دراسته ببحث تحدث فيه عن عضو من أعضاء الجهاز الهضمي، مبتدئ بالمريء فالفتق الحجابي، فالمعدة، والمعي الاثنا عشري، فالبنكرياس، فالكبد، فالمجاري الصفراوية، والأمعاء الدقيقة والغليظة، فالصفاق ومنتهي بالشرح كما واضاف إلى الدراسة مجموعة كبيرة من الصور الفوتوغرافية الملونة التي تساعد القارئ على فهم ما يتم شرحه.
