ظلت قصة اختيارى رئيسا للمخابرات العامة موضع استفهام بالنسبة لى فلم يقدر لى أن أعرف من هو صاحب الاختيار ولا ماهى أسبابه ودوافعه .... ولقد تبدد نصف الاستفهام بعد ذلك بسنوات .. أما نصفه الآخر فما زال لغزا حتى الآن.
لقد عرفت فقط فى السجن من الفريق أول محمد فوزى أن الرئيس السادات هو الذى أصر على اختيارى رئيسا للمخابرات وأنه رفض ترشيحى لمنصب وزارى آخر.
فقد رشحت فى البداية وزير للشباب فى أول تشكيل وزارى ،فى أعقاب توليه منصب رئيس الجمهورية ، بعد رحيل الرئيس جمال عبد الناصر ووصلتنى معلومات الترشيح بالفعل ، ووجدت أن المنصب الجديد يتفق مع خبرات عملى السابق كأمين لمنظمة الشباب ، لكننى فوجئت بعد أربعة أيام بسامى شرف يطلبنى على التليفزيون وينقل لى رسالة محددة: لقد صرف النظر عن تعيينك وزيرا للشباب .. وسوف تعين رئيسا لجهاز المخابرات العامة.
أخذتنى المفاجأة ... فقد كان ذلك خارج تصورى أو توقعى أو حتى خبرة عملى الطويلة المكتسبة ، ولذللك وجدتنى أصرخ على الطرف الآخر من التلفزيون من أذن سامى شرف: مخابرات ..إنها أبعد الأمور عني .. لكن سامى رد بيقين : لقد انقضى الأمر وصدر القرار وسوف تتسلم المخابارت ، امتلأ رأسى بعلامات الاستفهام .. وسرعان ماتحولت علامات الاستفهام حول القرار وصاحبه ودوافعه أو اسبابه إلى علامات استفهام أخرى حول المهمة الجديدة ...وأعبائها وظروفها.
