يعد الطب النفسي الجسدي فرع من فروع الطب وهو يبحث في ارتكاس الجملة العصبية الذاتية تجاه المؤثرات الانفعالية، وما ينعكس من هذه المؤثرات الانفعالية والارتكاسات العصبية الذاتية على وظائف أعضاء الجسم. وما قد تسببه هذه المؤثرات من أمراض عند المرء. وهنا لا بد من التمييز بين الأمراض العضوية والأمراض الوظيفية، فالأمراض العضوية هي الأمراض التي تختص بإصابة واحدة أو أكثر من أعضاء الجسم إصابة تغير الشكل النسيجي أو التشريجي لهذا العضو، أما الأمراض الوظيفية فهي لا تختص باضطراب في وظائف واحداً وأكثر من أعضاء الجسم دون تغير شكلي في هذا العضو.
وهناك تداخل مرضي هام للغاية بين الأمراض العضوية والأمراض الوظيفية. وهذا البحث الذي بين أيدينا يتناول هذا التداخل المرضي بين الأمراض العضوية والأمراض الوظيفية في الجهاز الهضمي، وقد جاء على شكل دليل ليساعد مرض الجهاز الهضم على فهم أوضح لمرضهم وتأثير الحالة النفسية عليه، وليساعدهم على سحن التعايش مع وضعهم الصحي، هذا التعايش الذي أن تحقق يريح المريض ويجنبه مشاكل عديدة. ولتحقيق هذه الغاية قدم المؤلف شرحاً وافياً عن أبرز الأعراض والأمراض الهضمية مع التفصيل في تأثير الحالة النفسية على المرض وسيره، إضافة إلى بحث في طرق المعالجة بشطريها-الدوائي الجراحي والنفسي عند الضرورة-مع نصائح عامة لتجنب أذى الشدات النفسية.
ومن أهم الأمراض الهضمية التي تحدث عنها المؤلف في كتابه هذا نذكر: عسرة البلع، ابتلاع الهواء، الافياء التخمة، الإسهال، الإمساك، الألم الشرجي العابر، القرحة الهضمية، الداء الزلاقي، التهاب الأمعان، والكولون المنطقي، انسداد الأمعاء الكاذب التهاب الكولون القرحي الخ. وإلى جانب هذه المواضع تعرض المؤلف في كتابه لموضوع البدانة، مبيناً تعريفها، أسبابها، طرق معالجتها، مظاهرها السريرية.
