عند التعمق في مسار القضية الفلسطينية منذ نكبة 1948، يتبين أن كل قضايا الصراع كان في الإمكان التوصل إلى حل ما بشأنها، إلا قضية اللاجئين وحقهم بالعودة. كما يتبين أن سبب فشل كل مشاريع التسوية التي قدمت، أنها لم تكن تتضمن تنفيذ قرارات الشرعية الدولية التي تنص على حق العودة وبخاصة القرار الأممي رقم 194.
وعند الغوص أكثر في أعماق القضية الفلسطينية، يصدم الباحث بعقدة عصية، فالمجتمع الدولي كان هو الساحة التي شهدت فصول انتزاع الأرض الفلسطينية من يد أصحابها الشرعيين، ومن ثم الاعتراف بقيام كيان آخر على حساب الشعب الفلسطيني، ما أدى إلى نشوء ما سمي بمأساة اللاجئين الفلسطينيين..
كما يصدم الباحث بأن المجتمع الدولي لم يكتف بما حصل، بل تعداه إلى إزالة اسم فلسطين من الخارطة السياسية العالمية عندما تعامل مع القضية الفلسطينية باعتبارها قضية إنسانية وليس قضية شعب له حقوق وطنية مثل باقي شعوب العالم.
لذلك يطرح المؤلف مجموعة من الأسئلة منها: هل لليهود حق في الاستيلاء على فلسطين؟ هل ترك اللاجئون الفلسطينيون بلدهم بمحض إرادتهم؟ ما هو دور المجتمع الدولي في خلق القضية الفلسطينية وحلها؟
