يتناول هذا الكتاب علاقة التحليل النفسي بالفن بشكل عام، وببعض العلوم كالعلوم اللغوية واللسانية، وعلم النفس الإجتماعي... أما القسم الأكبر من هذه الدراسة فخصصت لعلاقة التحليل النفسي بعلم الأدب. وفي هذا السياق يستعرض الكتاب مدارس التحليل النفسي الأدبي، ويضع الحدود الفاصلة بينها بهدف إزالة الإبهام والفوضى اللذين تعيشهما تلك المدارس لكونها تناولت قضايا التحليل النفسي للأدب بطريقة مشوهة، أو منقوصة، كلما أمعنا النظر إليها.
من هنا تأتي أهمية هذه المحاولة، فهذا العمل يمثل مصدراً غنياً لكل راغب في التعرف إلى قضايا التحليل النفسي الأدبي، فهو يتضمن تفسيرات، وشروحات لا تتوافر في غيره من المصادر المختصة. ولهذا عالج الباب الأول فيه مبادئ التحليل النفسي في ثلاثة فصول استعرض الفصل الأول أهم المبادئ التي قام عليها التحليل النفسي من أدلر إلى يونغ ورانك أونو، ودرس الفصل الثالث العلاقة التي تربط علم النفس ببعض العلوم الأخرى ومنها علم الإجتماع. أما الباب الثاني فخصص لدراسة التحليل النفسي في فصلين عالج الفصل الأول منهما، قضايا مدرسة التحليل النفسي الأدبي التي اعتبرت الأدب نتاج لا شعور كاتبه، وبحث الفصل الثاني التحليل النفسي الأدبي الذي اعتبر أن النص يمتلك "لا وعياً" خاصاً به، ومن أجل أن تكتمل الفائدة أكثر قام المؤلف بتطبيق مناهج مدارس التحليل النفسي الأدبي على بعض الأعمال الأدبية العربية، فدرس في الباب الثالث وفي فصله الأول تحليل النص على أساس اللاشعور، وفي الفصل الثاني حللَ بين النص وفق منهج اللا شعور الجمعي، أما في الفصل الثالث عمد إلى إدماج المدارس النفسية جميعها وعالج النص الأدبي على أساس هذه المناهج النفسية المتنوعة.
