ينصب اهتمام هذا الكتاب على تأمل ظاهرة الرواية العربية الجديدة عبر قراءة عدد من نماذجها الأساسية، أي تلك النصوص الروائية التي ترد إلى ذهن القارئ لدى الحديث عن روايات عربية غيرت في الشكل والرؤية التي استقرت في أعمال نجيب محفوظ الروائية الكلاسيكية.
وتنتمي النصوص التي تناولها الكتاب إلى جيل الستينات بالأساس، وإن كان بعضها قد أنجزه الجيل الذي الذي تلاه. لكن العودة إلى جيل الستينات وجيل السبعينات في بعده، لا تعني التسليم بخروج هذا الجيل أو ذاك من رحم الغيب أو كونه نبتاً شيطانياً أحدث قطعية مع الأجيال التي سبقته إلى الوجود والكتابة.
وقد حاول المؤلف أن يبين، من خلال القراءة النصية كيف أن "موسم الهجرة إلى الشمال" للطيب صالح و"البحث عن وليد مسعود" لجبرا إبراهيم جبرا، تمهدان لأفق من الكتابة الروائية العربية سيتحقق في أعمال صنع الله إبراهيم، وجمال غيطاني، وإلياس خوري، وإبراهيم الكوني، وسليم بركات، وغيرهم.
في هذا السياق من التفكير بتطور الكتابة الروائية العربية، كتب المؤلف فصول هذا الكتاب وهي تهمس بسؤال أساسي: كيف استطاع جيل الستينات، والجيل الذي تلاه، أن ينتهكا جسد الكتابة الروائية الكلاسيكية وينقلا الرواية العربية من أفق اليقين المستقر الهانئ إلى أفق الشك حتى في عملية الكتابة نفسها؟
