نُشر هذا الكتاب النادر عام 1918، وتناول فيه المؤلف البريطاني ليدر حياة أقباط مصر في ذلك العصر؛ فيسلط الضوء على الحياة الاجتماعية للأغنياء والفقراء ورجال الدين ويفرد فصلاً لعجائب القديسين وموالدهم، وللمعتقدات والخرافات، ثم يتحدث عن طقوس الولادة والتعميد واختيار الزوجة الصالحة والعُرس القبطي ثم عاداتهم في الحزن والموت. ويشرح في الجزء الثاني من الكتاب موقف المسيحي الشرقي داخل كنيسته وطريقة تعبده ومعتقداته والعلاقة بالتراث الفرعوني. كما يفرد فصلاً عن البطريرك كيرلس الخامس والأنبا إبرام. وينهى الكتاب بالعلاقة المركبة بين المسيحيين المصريين والاحتلال البريطاني إنه كتاب كانت المكتبة العربية بحاجة إليه خصوصًا أن تلك الفترة مهمة في تاريخ مصر وانعكس ما جرى فيها على ما أعقبها من فترات.. ومما يدعو للعجب أنه توجد إشارات عديدة إليه في الأدبيات القبطية وتلك التي تتناول تاريخ الأقباط الحديث وتاريخ الكنيسة القبطية في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وأوائل القرن العشرين ومع ذلك فهذه هي الترجمة العربية الأولى له.
