يعتبر توماس الأكويني من أعظم مؤسسي الفكر المسيحي في العصور الوسطى، ويعتبر المعلم الأول للكنيسة وحجتها في اللاهوت، وهو علم الأديان، والفلسفة المدرسية (سكولاستيك)؛ وبالرغم من أن الأكويني لم يعمّر كثيراً إلاّ أنه نجح في أن يحتل مكانة مرموقة في تاريخ الفلسفة عامّة، حيث ان فلسفته تُدرّس في جميع المعاهد الكاثوليكية التي تعلّم الفلسفة بإعتبارها الفلسفة الوحيدة الصحيحة.
فأصبح لذلك قاعدة للتعليم اللاهوتي والفلسفي في الكنيسة الكاثوليكية، وقد وزعت مواده حسب خط دائري ينطلق من الله وينفتح نحو المخلوقات التي لا تعود إلى نقطة إنطلاقها إلا بواسطة المسيح؛ وعلى ذلك فليست تقتصر أهمية القدّيس توما على الجانب التاريخي منه، لكنه إلى جانب ذلك، ذو أثر حيّ كأفلاطون، وأرسطو، وكانت، وهيجل.
بل إنه في الحقيقة أبلغ أثراً من الآخرين!! وهو في معظم الموضوعات يأخذ برأي أرسطو أخذاً أميناً، حتى لقد أصبح أرسطو معدوداً بين الكاثوليك واحداً من "الآباء" أو يكاد، وبات في رأيهم أن نقده في أمور الفلسفة الخالصة، ولعلّ المقصود الموضوعات الفلسفية التي لا صلة لها بالدين مباشرة، يقرب جداً من الكفر في الدين.
وستقرأ ما يرويه الشيخ عويضة في هذا الكتاب عن آراء توماس في المعرفة والأخلاق والسياسة والصلة بين النفس والبدن ومواقفه في وحدة العقل؛ ويختم الكاتب بالإشارة إلى خصائص النظام الإقطاعي وأثره على المجتمع الأوروبي.
