تبرز أهمية هذه الدراسة انطلاقاً من اهتمامها بعرض تاريخ "سفيان بن عيينة" الهلالي بشكل مفصل، إذ أنها لم تكتف بذكر نتف من أخباره، وترداد بعض من حكمه وأقواله، وإنما جمعت كل أخباره، ولملمت كل مواقفه ونسقتها في بحث متكامل يعرض المادة بطريقة علمية ومنهجية تمكن القارئ تكوين تصوّر واضح لهذه الشخصية.
وبناء على ذلك، فقد تضمنت هذه الدراسة خمسة فصول، بالإضافة وثبت بالمصادر والمراجع المعتمدة، وفهرس مفصل لشتى الموضوعات. فالفصل الأول خصص لدراسة "الأوضاع السياسية في مكة منذ عهد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وحتى نهاية الإمام سفيان بن عيينة"، وكانت الغاية منه، هي الإحاطة الشاملة بالأحداث التاريخية التي شهدتها مكة، وبالتالي تبيان المحيط العام الذي عاش فيه ابن عيينة، ومدى انعكاس ذلك على أوضاعه العلمية والمعيشية، وبالتالي مدى تأثيرها في إنتاجه الفكري.
ركّز الفصل الثاني، على دراسة شخصية سفيان بن عيينة بما في ذلك مولده ونشأته العلمية، ورحلاته وتنقلاته التي كانت أول الأمر، بسبب الوضع السياسي المضطرب، وثانياً، من أجل جمع الحديث النبوي الشريف عن مصادره الموثوقة. وبيّن الفصل الثالث، مقدرة ابن عيينة على حفظ الحديث واتقانه. أما الفصل الرابع، فتطرق إلى نشاطه الديني، وما تضمنته من عبادة وتقوى وزهد وورع، وهذه المزايا جعلته وجهاً لوجه أمام قضية القرآن الكريم، التي كان معنياً بها عناية كبيرة، أكان ذلك من حيث التصدي للبدع التي قيلت فيه أو من حيث دعوة الناس إلى الاهتمام به، وبالتالي عنايته بتلاوته وشرح آياته وتفسير غوامضه، وبذلك أدى دوره كاملاً من حيث تقريب القرآن للناس وتقريب الناس إليه. وأما الفصل الخامس فقد عالج "نشاط ابن عيينة الاجتماعي والسياسي" وذلك بالاستناد إلى أقواله ونصائحه التي كان يتحف بها أبناء مجتمعه.
