تهتم هذه الدراسة ببيان كل ما يتعلق بالإمام محمد بن الحسن الشيباني من أحوال وأوصاف، وما تركه من ثروة فقهية وعلمية موزعة في كتبه وكتاب غيره، والتي سيمر ذكرها من خلال تمهيد وبابين وخاتمة. أما التمهيد فتكلم عن حياة الإمام "محمد بن الحسن وعن رحلاته العلمية وسمات عصره السياسية والاجتماعية والعلمية مصوراً فهيا الأجواء المتنوعة التي عاشها الإمام والتي واكبت العصر العباسي من أوله وشهدت ازدهار عصر التدوين ثم تكلم عن أشهر شيوخه الذين انتفع بهم وأشهر تلاميذه الذين نشروا علمه والوظائف الحكومية التي عمل بها كالقضاء والتدريس.
وفي الباب الأول تحدث عن مؤلفات الإمام في الحديث وأشعر رواياته لا سيما عن شيوخه كالإمام أبي حنيفة وأبي يوسف والإمام مالك، وذكر ما امتازت به تلك الكتب والروايات، وأقوال أهل الجرح والتعديل في توثيق الإمام ومكانته العلمية بين العلماء وثناء علماء عصره عليه.
وأما الباب الثاني فتكلم عن مصادر فقه الإمام محمد بن الحسن وينابيع علمه والعوامل التي ساعدت على جعله إماماً مطلقاً، ثم تكلم عن أهم مؤلفاته الفقهية وما امتازت به من خصائص ثم تكلم عن القواعد والأصول الخلافية المعتمدة عند الإمام محمد وشيوخه الثلاثة أبي حنيفة وأبي يوسف ومالك، ثم انتقل إلى حصر مسائله التي خالف فيها شيوخه أبا حنيفة وأبا يوسف ومالك مستدلاً على كل بما يناسبها من الدليل الواضح والعبارة السهلة لشيوع الفائدة وتعميمها بين أوساط العلماء والمتعلمين.
أما في الخاتمة: فتم بيان جوانب شخصية الإمام وما امتاز به وما تركه من أثار علمية ومكانة مرموقة بين علماء عصره وما تضمنته الرسالة من نقاط جديدة من خلال الدراسة والبحث.
