يعتبر تاريخ بشر بن الحارث، المعروف "بالحافي هو الدراسة الثامنة في سلسلة أعلام الفقهاء والمحدثين". وقد وقع اختيار الباحث الدكتور عصام محمد الحاج علي" على هذه الشخصية لما تحتله من مكانة مرموقة في المجتمع الذي عاشت فيه، ولما اعترتها من تحولات جذرية وهامة، فهو بعد أن كان من أبناء الرؤساء والكتّاب، ويعاشر أصحاب الخلاعة والمجون، أخذ يقطع الطريق والدروب مع جماعة الشطّار والعيادين، وبعد ذلك يصحو من كبوته ويتوب إلى الله توبة نصوحة، مرتاداً مجالس العلم، ومرتحلاً بين البلاد للاجتماع بكبار الشيوخ وأئمة الحديث.
إن هذه الأمور مجتمعة وغيرها هي التي دعت الباحث لتدوين سيرة بشر الحافي، محللاً جوانبها الغامضة، وتأثرها بالمجتمع الذي عاشت فيه وإمكاناتها الفكرية والاجتماعية وكذلك الأسباب التي اضطرته لأن يترك حلقات العلم ويعتزل الناس. وموقفه من المشكلات الاجتماعية والقضايا السياسية التي عايشها في مجتمعه. وعلى العموم فإن أهمية هذه الدراسة تكمن في لفت أنظار الباحثين والقراء العرب إلى عظمة إعلام الأمة، الذين وهبوا حياتهم من اجل إصلاح الخلل الاجتماعي الذي أصاب أمتهم وبالتالي أخذهم بيد الشعب المغلوب على أمره في مواجهة المعضلات الحياتية والمصيرية التي يتحمل أوزارها أعضاء الطبقة الحاكمة، الذين يهيمنون على موارد البلاد، ويتحكمون برقاب العباد.
