اللغة أصوات يعبر بها كل قوم عن أغراضهم، كذلك عرفها إبن جني في الخصائص، والجرجاني في التعريفات.
واللغة كائن حي تنشأ وتنمو، وتتطور بتطور الناطقين بها، فنشأة اللغة تعود في الأساس إلى العواطف الإنسانية الأولى، لأن أول مدرسة يربى فيها الطفل هي مدرسة الأمومة، وفيها يرضع من أمه اللغة كما يمتص خصائصها الذاتية تماما.
وموضوع اللغة ومشاكلها هو موضوع الساعة، وسيظل هذا الموضوع جديدا طالما العربية هي لغتنا، وأداة تفاهمنا المعبرة عن إنسانيتنا والحاملة تراثنا، وسيظل البحث في مفرداتها وقواعدها أمرا مهما عند اللغويين. والغاية من دراستي هذه إلقاء الضوء على المفردات التي وردت في القاموس المحيط. هذا المعجم الذي ألفه الفيروزابادي يعد من أهم المعاجم العربية الضخمة المتداولة بين الناس وخاصة الطلاب، كما أن ترتيب أبوابه على الحرف الأخير يعين الشاعر على القافية ولعله أحد المقاصد التي أرادها إبن منظور صاحب معجم لسان العرب واختاره مثله الفيروزابادي.
ويبدو أن الفيروزابادي قد وجه كل عنايته إلى استيعاب أكبر عدد من ألفاظ اللغة، وجعلها في أقل عدد من المجلدات.
لذلك قامت د. حكمت فواز في التدقيق بدراسة هذا المعجم لتكون فكرة واضحة وشاملة تساعد الطلاب في دراساتهم الجامعية وتسهل لهم البحث عن الألفاظ في المعجمات العربية.
وتضمن هذا البحث الحديث عن نشأة القاموس المحيط، ومنهج الفيروزابادي في ترتيب المواد، يلي ذلك ترتيب حروف الهجاء، وتنسيق القاموس من حيث الفصول والأبواب. أما طريقة الفيروزابادي في الشرح، فقد تناولت فيها الكاتبة الحديث عن المادة، وكيفية شرحها، ثم عرضت فكرة موجزة عن أصوات اللغة لما لها من علاقة مباشرة بتوضيح المعنى. ثم اختارت من القاموس المحيط الأفعال الرباعية المكررة وجعلت للأفعال المفردة فهرسا وكذلك للأفعال المأخوذة.
